What Size Boiler Do I Need?

We appreciate choosing the right type of boiler to install in your home can be confusing. That's where we come in! Below, we've outlined some advice on how to choose the right type and size of boiler for your property and needs.

different sizes of boilers

Choosing the right type of boiler

First, you must choose the right type of boiler. Whichever one you choose depends on the requirements of your property and hot water and heating demands. Here are three main types:

Combination boilers

Combination boilers heat water on demand and don't require an external water cylinder or tank. They connect directly to the main water supply.

A combination boiler is a good option for you if you have a smaller household or if you don't have a loft space available for a hot water tank.

Conventional boilers

Conventional boilers heat water and then feed it into a hot water cylinder to keep it warm until it's needed. The water doesn't come directly from the water main and is instead routed through a cold water tank that's usually situated in the attic, which helps to maintain a strong rate of flow.

We recommend a conventional boiler if you have a larger bathroom with more than one bathroom or if you live on a property with low mains pressure.

System boilers

System boilers have similarities to both combi and conventional boilers. They require a hot water cylinder for storage but are actually connected to the cold mains water supply.

Choosing the right size of boiler

Once you've decided on the right type of boiler for your home, it's then time to choose the right size of boiler that will match your property's heating needs.

The size of boiler you choose will depend on the following factors:

  • The number of radiators in your home
  • The number of bedrooms in your home
  • The number of bathrooms in your home

Combi vs. Conventional and System Boilers

Combination boilers heat water on demand, which means they require a higher power output than the other two main types of boilers. Conventional and system boilers have a smaller power output as they heat the water before it's needed.
