Boiler Servicing: Frequently Asked Questions

What is boiler service?

A boiler service is a complete inspection performed by a certified engineer to ensure that your heating system runs efficiently, safely, and effectively. The service usually includes checking, cleaning, testing, and adjusting the boiler's components, such as the burner, heat exchanger, flue, and controls.

Why is servicing necessary?

Servicing your boiler is important for various reasons:

  • Safety: Regular maintenance helps to avoid dangerous problems like carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Efficiency: A well-maintained boiler consumes less fuel, which can drastically lower your energy costs.
  • Breakdown Prevention: Routine maintenance detects wear and tear as well as potential problems before they become expensive repairs.

How often should I have my boiler serviced?

It is suggested that your boiler be maintained once per year. This frequency ensures that your boiler is in good working order and that any concerns are addressed swiftly to avoid worse problems in the future.

What happens during the boiler service?

During a boiler servicing, the engineer will:

  • Visually inspect the boiler and flame, if applicable.
  • Inspect the operational pressure and/or heat input.
  • Examine the safety devices and clean any essential parts.
  • Examine the flue and combustion emissions.
  • Conduct a flue gas study to confirm that the boiler is burning the proper combination of gas and air.
  • Gas and water pipes are subjected to seal examination.
  • Prepare a service report that explains what was done to maintain the boiler

Do I need to prepare anything for the service?

Ensure that the engineer has clear access to the boiler and any associated equipment. If your boiler is in a cupboard, ensure that there is enough space for the specialist to work. Also, make any records of previous services available for the engineer to review.

What if an issue arises during the service?

If the expert discovers any problems during the service, they will inform you of the necessary repairs and the charges associated. Depending on the issue, it may be possible to resolve it during the service visit, or a follow-up session may be necessary.

Can anyone service a boiler?

No, only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to service a gas boiler in the UK. It is critical to ensure that the engineer servicing your boiler is on the Gas Safe Register, which confirms that they have the relevant qualifications and are legally permitted to operate.

This is not only a legal obligation, but also a critical safety precaution to avoid wrong handling, which can result in hazardous scenarios such as gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning. Always request to see their Gas Safe ID before enabling them to begin the service.
